CFE Webinar: Freedom of Expression, Protests, and Encampments

Key Details

  • Themes
Academic Freedom, Freedom of Association and Assembly / Protests

In September 2024, the Centre for Free Expression (CFE), based at Toronto Metropolitan University, hosted a webinar that asked: What can we learn from the events on Canadian and Quebec campuses following protests about the war in Gaza?

University administrations responded to the protests in many ways – from almost immediately calling in brutal police repression, to seeking injunctions, to negotiating creative resolutions with the protesting students, faculty, and staff. Where does this leave rights to freedom of expression and assembly on campus?

Panelists:

  • Jamie Cameron, Professor Emerita for Constitutional Law, Osgoode Hall Law School, York University
  • Sarah Hamill, Assistant Professor of Law, Trinity College Dublin
  • Louis-Philippe Lampron, Professor of Law, Université Laval
  • Finn Makela, Professor of Law, Université de Sherbrooke

Moderator:

  • James L. Turk, Director, Centre for Free Expression, Toronto Metropolitan University

The webinar was co-sponsored by Observatoire de la liberté d’expression, UQAC, and PEN Canada
