Please join us for a talk with Stavros Lambrinidis, European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights, on the state of play of human rights in the world at a time of rising nationalism and illiberal trends. The talk will be moderated by Dr. Agnes Callamard, Director of Columbia Global Freedom of Expression and the UN Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions.

Stavros Lambrinidis is the European Union Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights, a post he held since 2012. He is tasked with increasing the effectiveness, cohesion and visibility of the EU’s human rights foreign policy, and worked on the strengthening of Democracy, International Justice, Humanitarian Law and the abolition of the death penalty. Previously, he was Minister for Foreign Affairs in Greece. Between 2004 and 2011, he was a Member and Vice-President of the European Parliament in charge of International Relations and of the Parliament’s Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee. He has been parliamentary rapporteur on issues such as the promotion of security and fundamental rights in the internet age and the integration of immigrants in Europe.  He received his B.A. degree in Economics and Political Science from Amherst College and his J.D. degree from Yale Law School, where he was Managing Editor of The Yale Journal of International Law.
