María Luisa Romero

María Luisa Romero is a Senior Advisor to Global Freedom of Expression. She is a lawyer specializing in human rights and current member of the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture. She is a former Minister and Vice-Minister of Government in Panama where she oversaw issues related to justice, prisons, governance, refugees and indigenous peoples. Romero sits on the Board of Directors of the Fundación para la Libertad Ciudadana, the local chapter of Transparency International in Panama and is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, she was the author and main researcher of the recent publication titled “Use of force in the context of social protests: practical contributions based on a comparative analysis of domestic norms”.
