Our Turkey Series continues with the fifth panel bringing together distinguished speakers to discuss the paradigm shift fueled by the latest local elections. On May 6, 2019, Turkish Supreme Election Council’s decision on re-run of local elections in Istanbul shook the country to its core. In a country that is collapsing institutionally, what does the future hold for its citizens? Our speakers will critically analyze where this shift may take the country next both politically and socially. We will then delve into what “rule of law” means in the country and how it affects the ongoing trials of freedom of expression. Our speakers will expand on academic freedom in the light of Professor Fusun Ustel’s imprisonment on Tuesday, May 7th, 2019.
