Annual Report of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression – IACHR, 2024

Key Details

  • Region
    Latin-America and Caribbean

The annual report of the Office of the Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression is a key document that analyzes the state of the right to freedom of expression in the Americas. Its objective is to identify threats, progress, and good practices that contribute to strengthening the protection of this right in the region.

The report is based on information gathered by the Office from various sources —state, intergovernmental, civil society organizations, communicators, and the media— which is contrasted and verified before publication. The analysis is organized into four thematic areas: (i) journalism and democracy; (ii) freedom of expression, rule of law, and democratic institutionality; (iii) freedom of expression and the fight against discrimination and exclusion; and (iv) freedom of expression and the Internet.

This report serves as a resource for States to identify problems of concern or trends that must be addressed before they lead to irreparable effects on freedom of expression.
