PhD Position: Humor and Free Speech Adjudication

The University of Groningen is offering a 48-month full-time PhD position within the project “Democratic Literacy and Humor” (DELIAH), funded by European Research Council (ERC).

This role will focus on a sub-project focusing on humor, free speech jurisprudence, and online content moderation under the supervision of Dr. Alberto Godioli. In particular, this sub-project will tackle the following questions: How do judges and social media platforms deal with the grey area between disparaging humor and incitement to hatred, discrimination, or violence? How can they strike a fair balance between protecting freedom of expression on the one hand, while effectively countering discrimination and violence on the other?

  • Qualifications: MA in Law, Literary Studies, or related fields; expertise in humor research and/or interdisciplinary legal studies; excellent research skills; excellent academic writing skills in English; strong interest in collaborative research and engaging non-academic audiences.
  • Start Date: March 1, 2025.
  • Application Deadline: November 20, 2024 – 11:59pm Dutch local time (CET).
  • Salary: € 2,872 gross per month in the first year, up to a maximum of € 3,670 gross per month in the final year, based on a full-time position.
