Job Description:

Columbia Global Freedom of Expression (GFoE) is recruiting a junior lawyer/program assistant to work with its team and leadership. The ideal candidate will have excellent analytical and organizational skills and the ability to communicate fluently in both English and Spanish.

Established by President Lee C. Bollinger in 2014, Columbia Global Freedom of Expression seeks to advance understanding of the international and national norms and institutions that best protect the free flow of information and expression in an interconnected global community with major common challenges to address. To achieve its mission, Global Freedom of Expression undertakes and commissions research and policy projects, organizes events and conferences, and participates in and contributes to global debates on the protection of freedom of expression and information in the 21st century.


50% Legal analytical work & research

  • Write case analyses for our Case Law Database on global judicial cases in English and Spanish
  • Conduct legal research and prepare briefs on topics related to freedom of expression as requested by our leadership, such as, but not limited to: violence against journalists, privacy, content moderation, access to information, etc.
  • Review and assess relevant legal documents for projects related to the program
  • Prepare and present presentations on judicial cases to our leadership on an as-needed basis

50% Administrative & logistical support

  • Assist the leadership team with administrative support, including managing time-sensitive deadlines, scheduling requests of high-level individuals, and providing timely status updates and reports as needed
  • Manage the logistics of public and private events within GFoE
  • Draft and prepare speeches, materials, and communications related to conferences and events
  • Prepare, translate, review, edit and proofread a variety of documents in English and Spanish
  • Special projects as needed by leadership


  • Bachelor’s degree 
  • Junior lawyer
  • 0-2 years of work experience
  • Fluency in English and Spanish required, knowledge of a third language is a plus
  • Experience with event & project management and administrative support, experience assisting and providing direct support to high-level executives is a plus
  • Ability to follow verbal instructions and take accurate, fast notes
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to maintain professionalism under pressure
  • Simultaneously handle multiple tasks with accuracy and demonstrated ability to prioritize and reprioritize responsibilities, meet deadlines, make decisions and change course of action quickly
  • Excellent analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills
  • Experience with social media, graphic design and/or communications is a plus
