Reem Elshazly
Reem Elshazly is an Egyptian-Palestinian lawyer and journalist. Beginning her journalism career at the age of 17, Reem has contributed to prestigious international media outlets as well as bold independent Egyptian media, with a particular focus on women’s empowerment throughout history. She played a pivotal role in an activism campaign that exposed corruption within the Egyptian Handball Federation and its discriminatory practices against women. This campaign resulted in the dismissal of the Federation’s board, the establishment of a Women’s National Handball team, and the recognition of female players as professional athletes.
In December 2023, Reem joined Columbia Global Freedom of Expression (CGFoE) following her involvement in “The Decisions of Meta’s Oversight Board As A Vehicle Towards Digital Justice” seminar. Since then, her work with CGFoE has centered on Meta’s Oversight Board decisions and the Arabic database.
